Teal Coat

Wendy Drews

It was Fall of 2018 and my son picked out a teal color winter coat from Land's End. He was so happy about this and really loved that coat. One sleeve ended up getting torn from playing but it was his brand new coat. We ended up being harassed about his choice for this color. He was accused of wearing a girl's coat and more things. Sadly, the coat was taken away and replaced with a grey coat with an orange Indian symbol on the arm and was said to be a boy's coat. I never knew the color teal was not considered gender neutral. When I was working in the studio I didn't plan on taking a photo of the teal coat. I randomly chose the photo to add to a page as I work on this website. I could write a lot more about this experience as legal abuse is destroying many lives in America. But, I will close off on this for now. Capturing that time and memory on film will always remind me to stay true to myself and values. We must protect children at all costs as they are the future.
